2 dead in 4-vehicle collision, Highway 7 closed west of Perth

(Joseph Tunney/CBC)A four-vehicle crash early Friday killed two people and has closed Highway 7 between Perth and Maberly, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).OPP said in a news release that emergency services responded to the crash near Maberly just after 3 a.m.Police told CBC that a 59-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man from Ottawa who were travelling in an SUV died at the scene.Four more people were injured, including two who were critically hurt and transported to hospital. The others suffered minor injuries. Two transport trucks and a pickup truck were also involved in the crash, OPP said. None of the injured were children.While police said an investigation is ongoing, they indicated the vehicles were travelling in different directions.”It appears that the westbound [pickup] truck may have initially had a collision with the eastbound transport truck,” OPP officer Corey Noonan told CBC.Collision reconstructionist are at the scene trying to figure out what caused the crash, he said.Police said Highway 7 could remain closed for several hours and are advising drivers to take alternative routes.The closure currently stretches from Lanark Road in Perth to County Road 36 in Maberly, with suggested detours on County Road 6 to the south or Fallbrook and Bennett Lake roads to the north.
