26-year-old man charged with 4 child-related sexual offences, Charlottetown police say

(Kevin Yarr/CBC)Police in Charlottetown have arrested a 26-year-old man and charged him with multiple sexual offences against a child. The man was arrested Aug. 21, after police received a report the day before about possible sexual offences committed against a child by someone known to the family, Charlottetown Police Services said in a news release Friday. According to court documents, police allege the man sexually assaulted a person under the age of 16, touched them with his hands and genitals, and threatened to kill them in an effort to keep the abuse secret.  The accused faces the following charges: Sexual assault.  Sexual interference.  Extortion.  Uttering threats.  The man remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 11 to answer to the charges.A court-ordered publication ban has been placed on the file in order to protect the identity of the victim.  Charlottetown police said in the release that they are “working closely with Child and Family Services and Victim Services to ensure the continued safety and well-being of the victim and their family is maintained throughout the investigation.”ABOUT THE AUTHORMarilee Devries is a journalist with CBC P.E.I.
