She holds several honourary doctorate degrees. In February, Aglukark began her 34-stop anniversary tour across Canada which brings her to Glace Bay this month. She also has performances scheduled for Truro, Pictou, Chester and Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia. The album “This Child” features the song “O Siem” that made her the first Inuk artist to have a top-10 hit in Canada. Her tour setlist features songs from the album including the title track that begins with and ends with: “This child, my fellow human being … This child, you’ll never be alone, I’m forever by your side.” Over the years it has become an anthem sung at school concerts everywhere. “I’m really excited about sharing the journey (from) who I was 30 years ago and who I am today,” Aglukark said in an interview in February with the Nunatsiaq News of Iqaluit. Article contentThe tour will reflect on Rankin Inlet-raised Aglukark’s early years, which she describes as a time of deep emotional growth. Her journey as a singer-songwriter began in the early 1990s when she began her writing and recording career. At the beginning of this anniversary tour, she told media that she has come to understand the effects of intergenerational trauma and the trauma she experienced in her own life. As she approaches the age of 60, she feels ready to share her knowledge. “Thirty years ago, I had no choice but to leave and start over. I couldn’t live safely in a community where my abuser still resided. What I left behind wasn’t a community, it was an environment of crisis. That’s why I feel I’m ready to tell my story now,” she was quoted in the Nunatsiaq News. Aglukark says she is ready to reconnect with the fan base she first encountered in her early years. Since the release of “Her Child” in 1995, she has written and recorded 10 albums, founded the Arctic Rose Foundation, authored two children’s books and has a personal memoir in the works. Her writing of “This Child” more than three decades ago brought her to a personal call to action to speak up, learn, heal and share, and this has been her work for these 30 years.
