1 dead after fire in southwest Saskatoon on Saturday

(Submitted by Saskatoon Fire Department)The Saskatoon Fire Department says a fire in a building in the 600 block of Avenue N S. in Saskatoon on Saturday morning began in the basement at the bottom of the stairs.One person died in the fire, the department said. They have not been identified. The department says it also hasn’t determined why they were in the building at the time of the fire.The department reported that three fire engines, a rescue unit, one ladder truck and the battalion chief were dispatched to a fire in the area just after 9 a.m. CST on Saturday.At 9:28 a.m., fire crews inside the building found the person and removed them. The fire was brought under control 15 minutes later. The fire department estimates about $125,000 worth of damage was done to the building, which has been closed.The department’s fire investigator is co-ordinating with the Saskatoon Police Service to determine the cause of the fire.
