The man convicted of two counts of manslaughter in 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in prison in the killings of two Métis hunters in Alberta has been denied full parole. According to documents obtained by APTN News, the Parole Board of Canada denied Roger Bilodeau’s bid for full parole July 8, but is allowing him to continue day parole for six months until January 2026. Bilodeau was convicted alongside his son Anthony Bilodeau in the 2020 shooting deaths of Maurice Cardinal, 57, and his nephew Jacob Sansom, 39. The slayings took place in Glendon, Alta., about 200 km northeast of Edmonton. Cardinal and Sansom were on their way home from hunting in March 2020 when they were shot and killed and left on the side of a highway. Bilodeau and his son believed the men were thieves. In rendering its decision, the parole board assessed Bilodeau’s risk to society and the potential for reintegration. The Board said it reviewed two recent victim impact statements dated June 14 and June 17, 2025, in which concerns are expressed about the level of insight Bilodeau has into his offence. The statements also addressed concerns about Bilodeau’s “ongoing thoughts that promote vigilante justice” and the ongoing fears of the victim’s family about any contact with Bilodeau. The board says the submissions speak to “further traumatization with each hearing that occurs and/or appeal process.” The parole board also cited what it called “Bilodeau’s lack of insight into his offense and cognitive distortions” which it said were significant concerns. Bilodeau was granted unescorted temporary absences, or UTAs for “personal development and family contact” in Jan. 2024. His nephew Anthony Bilodeau is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 13 years. His attempts to appeal his conviction have been exhausted. The board imposed several special conditions on Roger Bilodeau including following psychological counseling, respecting a curfew of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and not contacting the victims or their families unless permitted by his parole supervisor.
