New commemorative crosswalks installed in Stewiacke

Photo by Aidan Rawding /Truro NewsArticle contentThe project was a collaborative effort between the legion and the town.Article content“We were happy to help them out with getting it done,” said Marc Seguin, chief administrative officer for the Town of Stewiacke.Article content“I think it’s great that we’re remembering and supporting our veterans and supporting our local legion.”Article contentOTHER PROJECTSArticle contentThe crosswalk is one of the few gestures the legion has done to demonstrate its commitment to both veterans and the community, said Ian Gulliver, another member on the legion’s board.Article content“Part of that,” said Gulliver of the crosswalk, “is because the community is so supportive of the legion that we want to have things that are going to show them that the legion is here for them.”Article contentArticle contentThis also includes a mural commissioned by local artist Andre Preston at the front of the legion building, and a commemorative entrance made by local manufacturer MGM Architectural Aluminum and Glass.Article content The crosswalks can be viewed in the background of this photo of the Stewiacke cenotaph. Photo by Aidan Rawding /Truro NewsArticle contentCome Remembrance Day in November, Gulliver said they may use a leftover stencil from the project to paint the phrase ‘Lest We Forget’ along the sidewalk in front of the cenotaph, too.Article contentMembers of the legion said the public responded positively to the new installations on social media.Article content“We got good comments back from the community,” said Gulliver.Article content“It wasn’t very costly for us to do, so it’s an easy recognition from the legion to the community, and also, in memory of the veterans.”Article content
