Annual Tłıchǫ Government canoe trip cut short in N.W.T.

An annual canoe trip in the Northwest Territories and organized by the Tłı̨chǫ Government, was cut short after some members had to be airlifted out because of an unexpected wildfire. The Trails of Our Ancestors trip is made up of mainly young people who paddle from various communities to the annual gathering. Forty two paddlers from Gameti were evacuated on Aug. 3. “We know this sudden turn of events may have been difficult, and we’re proud of the strength and calm shown by the gamètì group,” said the nation in a statement. There were no reported injuries during the evacuation. Canoe groups from the communities of Wekweeti and Whati are safe and are scheduled to arrive in Behchoko this weekend. Continue Reading
