Letter: Candidates in coming election must stand for life, liberty and security

Writer wants constituents to impress the importance of crime reduction on those seeking election The buck stops at the candidates in the upcoming election. Life, liberty and security or continuing crime industry across Canada.  Yukoners are all talking about how to fight crime now that our leadership has chosen to empower criminals and illegal activity in the territory. Without penalties, confinement, punishment, fines, correction, and/or vengeance, our health, family, streets, property, homes, businesses, and schools will continue to be unsafe as we, law-abiding citizens, continue to live in fear.  Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of rights and freedoms protects the right to “life, liberty and security.”  How did we mess this up? Canadian citizens should never be told to protect themselves through costly security and compliance with criminals. This is an insult and disgrace to our inept justice system and needs to change NOW. April 28 is election day, leadership candidates from all stripes will be at your beck and call for your vote and now is the time to ask the hard questions that need detailed answers. How are you going to STOP all crime in the territory and focus on public life, liberty and security? This is our right and we all want it back.  Let’s keep it simple, we won’t vote for continuing with feeble excuses, now part of Bill C75 Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice amendments. The amendments make more excuses and the issues more complex versus simple and effective.  Effective means producing a desired and intended outcome from our courts resulting in penalties satisfactory to the desired result of our victims and Yukon citizens. Safe communities.  Criminals, regardless of the severity or number of occurrences, need reprimand severe enough to deter/stop any further harm to Canadians. Thieves and vandals, support to illegal drugs, abusers, domestic violence, public intoxication, assault and battery, internet hacking, cybercrime, phone scams and fraud, to name a few despicable illegal behaviours need to be stopped.  Citizens need to be aware at all times of any occurrences of crime to self-protect their families. Citizens need to be on alert and ready to take photos, defend themselves and report. Crime needs to be foremost in the faces of all Yukoners for their own protection until our courts and services have implemented solutions that satisfy the law-abiding public. Too harsh? Ask the victims. So, ask these questions of every candidate in the upcoming candidate race and don’t accept any excuses, referrals or complex inept amendments detailed in Bill C75, to deter your mission for immediate change.  Sue Greetham  Marsh Lake
