Two summer byelections could shake up the P.E.I. legislature. Voters head to the polls in Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park and Brackley-Hunter River on Aug. 12. Photo by File /The GuardianArticle contentCheers to voters in districts 9 and 15 in Prince Edward Island who have already voted or plan to vote in the by-elections for the two districts. It is notoriously difficult to get voters to exercise their rights in the summer months when P.E.I.’s main industries are in full throttle and other Islanders are on vacation. Marking that X is important to ensure those elected represent the wishes of constituents, so it’s heartening to know hundreds have already made the effort to get to the advance polls. Today is the last day for the advance poll and Election Day for both districts is Tuesday.THIS CONTENT IS RESERVED FOR SUBSCRIBERS ONLY.Subscribe now to access this story and more:Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsSUBSCRIBE TO UNLOCK MORE ARTICLES.Subscribe or sign in to your account to continue your reading experience.Unlimited access to the website and appExclusive access to premium content, newsletters and podcastsFull access to the e-Edition app, an electronic replica of the print edition that you can share, download and comment onEnjoy insights and behind-the-scenes analysis from our award-winning journalistsSupport local journalists and the next generation of journalistsRegister to unlock more articles.Create an account or sign in to continue your reading experience.Access additional stories every monthShare your thoughts and join the conversation in our commenting communityGet email updates from your favourite authorsSign In or Create an AccountorArticle contentArticle contentArticle contentArticle contentJeers to those who have cynically contributed to the misinformation campaign that has caused doubts around vaccinations. Until this year, Canada could brag it had eliminated measles. Now, with cases beginning in New Brunswick in 2024 and continuing to spread across the country, including P.E.I., Canada will lose that designation. As the school year approaches, it’s time for families to check their vaccination statuses and make sure shots for the measles and other preventable illnesses are up to date.Article content As the school year approaches, it’s time for families to check their vaccination statuses and make sure shots for the measles and other preventable illnesses are up to date. This week, all three counties in P.E.I. have been under a total fire ban and all burning permits have been suspended. Even when conditions improve, no domestic brush burning or campfires are permitted between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at all from March 15 to Nov. 15. Not knowing the rules can be dangerous — and costly. In P.E.I. National Park, for example, burning illegally could lead to a fine of up to $25,000.Article contentArticle content As of Thursday, Aug. 7, the province has suspended all burning permits across P.E.I., and there are burning restrictions in place. 123RF Stock PhotoArticle contentArticle contentCheers to P.E.I. participants in the upcoming Canada Games, taking place in St. John’s Aug. 8-25.
