(Don Somers/CBC)The University of Saskatchewan has named its next president.Vince Bruni-Bossio, formerly the interim provost and vice-president academic, was announced Tuesday as the 12th person to hold the role, succeeding Peter Stoicheff, who was appointed as president nearly a decade ago.”As the next president of the University of Saskatchewan, I do want to recognize the strong foundation we’ve built together,” Bruni-Bossio said at an announcement event. “About 70 per cent of our students now stay in the province, and that’s one of the partnerships we have with the province that we’re very grateful for.”Premier Scott Moe attended the event at the Saskatoon university’s convocation hall on Tuesday and spoke to the province’s relationship with the institution.”We will be able to continue to strive under Dr. Bruni-Bossio’s tenureship, which appears at a very pivotal point in our nation,” he said.Premier Scott Moe said on Tuesday that outgoing president Peter Stoicheff left Vince Bruni-Bossio with big shoes to fill. (Don Somers/CBC)Moe praised Stoicheff for the work he did as president, saying he “created a stellar reputation, not only for yourself, but a stellar reputation for the University of Saskatchewan, and not just in this community, the university and academic community, but across our province, across the nation, and I dare say around the world.””I very much look forward to participating in celebrations of your career in the not too distant future.”Aside from teaching management and marketing at the Edwards School of Business, Bruni-Bossio’s research has focused on strategy and governance in not-for-profits, for-profits, credit unions and Indigenous organizations. His most recent research focused on how boards address accountability in not-for-profit organizations.He is also co-owner of Open Circle Strategies Inc., a consulting company that deals with strategic planning, business consulting, governance training and policy writing.Bruni-Bossio said he is happy to be taking on the role at a time when universities are being asked to demonstrate their value to society.”I believe deeply that a large part of our future success will derive from our connection with local communities,” Bruni-Bossio said. “We understand that our mission of being the university the world needs must now prioritize being the university that Saskatchewan needs.”Bruni-Bossio ended his acceptance speech by expressing his commitment to Indigenous peoples, truth and reconciliation, and the intention to “move forward with members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, people of colour, people with disabilities and accessibility needs, and individuals with diverse ethnic backgrounds.
