PEIT3 Transit has announced an expansion of hours and routes that will launch later this month, increasing the frequency of the service across Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall.Frequency of stops in Cornwall and Stratford will increase during weekday non-peak hoursRyan McKellop · CBC News · Posted: Aug 19, 2025 5:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: August 19T3 Transit has announced it’s modifying some routes and increasing the frequency of service in Cornwall and Stratford. (P.E.I. government)T3 Transit has announced an expansion of hours and routes that will launch this month, increasing the frequency of the service across Charlottetown, Stratford and Cornwall. In a news release, the City of Charlottetown said the major improvement will take place along Route 10 in the capital. What’s currently known as the East Royalty Shuttle will be renamed the East Royalty Collector and as of Aug. 25, the service will climb from three departures each weekday to 11. The release made note of other changes coming to Charlottetown routes: Additional shuttle service has been added during morning and afternoon peak hours to support Route 2 where it serves West Royalty. Schedules remain the same, but riders may need to transfer to reach their destination. Route 23 will no longer travel the Norwood Road-Robin Avenue loop and will not visit the Sherwood Business Centre directly at peak hours. This is due to overlap with the new Route 10 and will speed up the Route 23 service by making it more direct. Route 3 has been redirected up the internal UPEI road since mid-July to more directly serve the Atlantic Veterinary College, the Mount, the CARI and the UPEI Medical School. This change is now being made permanent. According to the release, the new schedule will enable East Royalty transit riders to make easy transfers at places like the Sherwood Business Centre, connecting to downtown, UPEI, the QEH, the Royalty Crossing Mall and more.Growing demands and community feedbackThe city said the changes follow an increased demand for the transit service.”We’re really pleased to be offering an expansion of our T3 Transit services in all three municipalities,” said Anna Keenan, sustainable transportation officer for the City of Charlottetown.Keenan said Stratford and Cornwall will see an additional four hours of transit service in the middle of weekdays.”There was … quite a large gap between, you know, the hours of say 8:30 and 3 p.m., you may get service every two hours,” she said.”This will bring it up to an hourly frequency consistently throughout the middle of those weekdays.”The release stated the increased service outside peak hours will help residents of those communities run errands and go on trips within the municipality, while still providing routes to Charlottetown for things like appointments or work.Town of Stratford officials had previously asked for more Stratford-centric routes.Anna Keenan, the sustainable transportation officer for the City of Charlottetown, says the service expansion represents a 7.5 per cent increase to the T3 Transit system. (Tony Davis/CBC)The service expansion is especially good news for seniors living on Norwood Road in East Royalty. Keenan said the northern end of Norwood was paved last year, providing an opportunity to add a transit route in the area. She said feedback from those seniors was taken into account when making modifications to the route.”We have received feedback from seniors who live in the apartments … that they would like service that goes closer to their door,” said Keenan.”Previously it was a good eight to 10 minute walk down to the nearest bus service.”Keenan said the service expansion adds nearly eight per cent capacity to the system, as much as is possible given current constraints.”We do need a renewed fleet, which we’re working on, but this is an ambitious expansion within the bounds of what we can do with our current fleet this year,” she said.New schedules and route maps are available on the T3 Transit website.ABOUT THE AUTHORRyan McKellop is a graduate of the Holland College Journalism program and a web writer at CBC P.E.I.With files from Stephen Brun
