Hogan said that NPs have advanced skills and training; they diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, perform medical procedures, address physical and mental health needs, and help patients manage chronic illnesses.Article content“They ensure that individuals in this province will get the care they need without disruption, and they’ll get to see a specialist or doctor if necessary,” said Hogan.Article contentThe launch of this pilot program, Hogan said, is to connect even more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to primary health care.Article contentArticle contentAccording to Hogan, NPs who participate in this project will be affiliated with family care teams but will also be considered independent contractors. Hogan added that these NPs will provide a combination of scheduled and same-day appointments.Article contentFor nurses who wish to participate, Hogan said that they would receive annual funding from the provincial government for medically necessary health services.Article contentHe believes that it will not only increase access to primary care but also lead to more nurses getting the specialty training to become nurse practitioners.Article content“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are better off today than they were yesterday in terms of Healthcare being delivered in this province,” said Hogan.Article content Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Health and Community Services, said that in going into the role, establishing a nurse practitioner funding model was a priority of hers.
