(Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press)Winnipeg police are warning the public of a potential phone scam, after some people were reportedly asked for personal information during calls from what appeared to be the service’s non-emergency line.Police say they got a number of reports on Monday from people who had received calls from individuals identifying themselves as Winnipeg police, and that the call displays showed the calls came from the service’s non-emergency number (204-986-6222).While motives are unclear, police say a few of the reports show that some call recipients were asked for personal information.”There was no request for any kind of funds or money in any of the calls, but that is certainly something that there was potential [for],” Const. Claude Chancy told CBC News on Tuesday.The call recipients were all outside Manitoba, with calls reported from Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, he said.Law enforcement agencies will never call to ask for personal information or money, Chancy said.Police are reminding the public not to share any personal information about their bank accounts, identification numbers, credit cards or personal finances with anyone. The warning is being made to prevent potential fraud that could lead to misuse of personal and financial information.Anyone who gets a call like the ones reported is asked to contact the non-emergency line at 204-986-6222.
