Nick DeFazio of Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) says the early morning fire demonstrated the importnce of planning ahead. “In new construction, you have about two minutes to exit a home, and that’s why we are so serious about checking your smoke alarm, having two exits that you’ve pre-planned, having a meeting point outside,” he said.”The [new] construction, it burns quick, and that siding is like liquid gasoline,” DeFazio continued. “That was the case in these townhomes. It was siding, it wasn’t brick all around, and that siding goes up extremely fast and the fire will crawl right to your attic.”Defazio said the woman’s husband was also sent to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The heat from the blaze was so intense it caused melting on cars parked across the street, he added.
