(Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon/CBC)Saint John police are investigating the death of a man at an uptown residence Wednesday night as a murder.Officers responded to 911 calls about a “commotion” at a multi-unit building on Carleton Street shortly before 11 p.m., said Staff Sgt. Sarah Hobbs, of the Saint John Police Force. When they arrived, they discovered an unconscious 34-year-man with “serious injuries,” she told reporters Thursday.Although the officers immediately provided first aid and additional emergency responders soon arrived to assist, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Hobbs said.Police have not released the name of the victim or said whether he lived there. Asked whether he was known to police, Hobbs said she was “not able to disclose that at this time.”No arrests have been made, but police believe it’s an isolated incident, Hobbs said.Saint John police believe the man’s death is an isolated incident and that ‘the parties were known to each other,’ said Staff Sgt. Sarah Hobbs. (Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon/CBC)”Based on the information that has been gathered thus far, it’s believed … that the parties were known to each other,” she said.Hobbs could not confirm whether that means police have any suspects.Asked why police have so early in the investigation deemed the case a murder — which involves intent, malice or premeditation — rather than a homicide, which is a broader term for any instance of one person killing another, Hobbs told CBC News it was “based on the evidence that was presented on scene.”That includes the nature of the victim’s injuries, she confirmed, declining to elaborate. She cannot discuss the manner of death or what, if any, weapons were involved, she said, in order to “protect the integrity of the investigation and future court proceedings.”Police remained at the scene on Carleton Street, gathering evidence, into Thursday afternoon. (Bobbi-Jean MacKinnon/CBC)The major crime unit and forensic identification services are investigating, in co-operation with the coroner’s office, Hobbs said.Police were interviewing people “all day,” she said. She could not say how many people, but did say police received 911 calls from a number of neighbours regarding a “commotion … inside the building.”On Thursday afternoon, a shattered window on the outside of the three-storey brick building was duct taped and boarded up. A window inside the vestibule was also broken. It’s unclear if these are related to the case.Officers remained at the scene, just a few doors down from Stone Church, collecting evidence, late into the day.Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Saint John Police Force at 1-506-648-3333, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or 1-800-222-T.I.P.S.
