Two men have serious injuries after side-by-side crash in Sydney

(Tom Ayers/CBC)Cape Breton Regional Police are investigating a side-by-side crash in Sydney this weekend that sent two men to hospital with serious injuries.The men, ages 24 and 30, were thrown from the vehicle when it flipped several times early Sunday morning near Lingan Road.”They’re both lucky to be alive,” said Const. Gary Fraser. “According to the officers on the scene it was quite the carnage.”Fraser said both of the riders were thrown about nine metres from the vehicle in opposite directions. The men, both from Glace Bay according to police, were transported to Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The younger rider was later airlifted to Halifax.  Fraser said the crash occurred at around 3 a.m., and police were notified of the incident when they received an alert from a rider’s cellphone.”That alerted the police to go to that area,” Fraser said. “Then we triangulated the cellphone and we went in that direction, and we found them on the side of the road.”The incident is under investigation, Fraser said.He said police are not releasing the names of the riders, but confirmed they are both from Glace Bay.ABOUT THE AUTHORMaria Collins is a reporter and associate producer with CBC Cape Breton.
