(Earthquakes Canada)A magnitude 2.6 earthquake was felt in parts of Maple Ridge Monday evening, an event seismologists say is rare but not unheard of. The earthquake hit at 9:28 p.m. about 16 kilometres northeast of Maple Ridge, in a mountainous area near Alouette Lake. Natural Resources Canada received several reports of people feeling the earthquake in Maple Ridge. Seismic analyst Christopher Boucher said an earthquake of this size is expected to be felt, given how close it was to populated areas. “Beyond the shaking, which would have been fairly brief, it would not have been felt very far outside of that and would certainly not cause any damage,” he said. Earthquakes of this magnitude are common around the coast, but are rare this far inland, Boucher said, adding the last earthquake of a similar size in Maple Ridge was a 3.1 magnitude in 1991.”These are a good reminder to always be prepared.” People should be prepared to drop, cover, and hold on when they feel an earthquake or receive an alert that a quake is imminent, Boucher said.ABOUT THE AUTHORMichelle Gomez is a writer and reporter at CBC Vancouver.
