(Phichet Chaiyabin/Shutterstock)Children attending an elementary school in Winnipeg’s River Heights neighbourhood may have been exposed to measles four times since students returned to classes last week, Public Health officials said Thursday. Anyone who was at Carpathia School, located at 300 Carpathia Rd., on Sept. 3 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. should monitor for symptoms for three weeks after initial exposure to the highly contagious disease, Manitoba health officials said in a news release. Anyone who was at the school for the breakfast and lunch program on any of those dates should also monitor for symptoms, the province said. Measles symptoms include a fever, runny nose, drowsiness, red eyes and small white dots on the inside of the throat and mouth. The characteristic red skin rash often appears within a few days of initial symptoms.Health officials encourage people who may have been exposed to measles at Carpathia School in the last week to check their immunization records to make sure their vaccines are up to date. Immunization is the only way to protect people from contracting measles, the province said.On Wednesday, the province announced seven new confirmed cases of measles, bringing the total case count to 198 confirmed and 16 probable cases so far this year. CBC News has reached out to the Winnipeg School Division but did not immediately receive a response.
