(CBC)A 44-year-old woman was killed Friday night in a shooting on a southeastern Saskatchewan highway that police believe was random.RCMP officers were called shortly after 8 p.m. Friday with a report of a seriously injured person in an SUV on Highway 39, about three kilometres west of Weyburn.Insp. Ashley St. Germaine of the RCMP’s major crimes branch said Saturday that two women were travelling toward Weyburn in a black Ford Explorer when they heard a loud crack.”An investigation to date indicates someone discharged a firearm which struck and entered the travelling Ford Explorer, injuring the passenger, a 44-year-old female from Weyburn,” St. Germaine said on Saturday. She said the woman was shot and died at the scene. Her death is considered suspicious. The family has been notified, and St. Germaine said, “Our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time.”The driver, who is also from the Weyburn area, was not injured and is not considered a suspect, St. Germaine said. No one else was in the vehicle. The RCMP’s major crimes unit is investigating, and at this point, the shooting appears to have been random, St. Germaine said.”We don’t believe that there’s any increased risk to the public,” she said.St. Germaine said investigators have not determined where the shot came from or the type of firearm used, but did confirm the bullet went through the back of the vehicle.”We are still in the infancy in determining exactly how that happened,” St. Germaine said.Insp.
