MLA Herb Nakimayak has been named interim president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) Canada, until next summer.Nakimayak, originally from Paulatuk, N.W.T., has been the ICC Canada’s vice president since 2022. He also held that position between 2014 and 2018, and was the MLA for Nunakput from 2015 to 2019.He’ll take over the ICC presidency from Natan Obed, who was serving as acting president since earlier this year.In a news release on Wednesday, the organization said Nakimayak brings “a wealth of leadership and governance experience to the role,” and cited his “extensive work on marine management issues in the Western Arctic.”He will serve in the role until the next ICC election, next summer.In a statement, Nakimayak described it as “an important moment in history, as ICC’s work grows in significance within today’s geopolitical landscape.””I look forward to working with Inuit leaders, youth, and communities to strengthen our connections and ensure Inuit voices are heard clearly on the international stage,” he said. The Inuit Circumpolar Council is an advocacy group founded in 1977 to represent Inuit from Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Russia.
