(CBC)The heavy rain that pounded Regina last Friday and Saturday did not result in a dump of sewage into Wascana Creek and its downstream lakes after all, the City of Regina says.”The previously released information that 1.3 megaliters of wastewater were discharged into the creek on Sept. 13 was inaccurate,” the city said in a news release Wednesday.”Although flow rates reached high levels and the city’s warning alarms indicated a bypass may be imminent, the wastewater system maintained sufficient capacity for the full duration of the storm and subsequent system analysis over the last few days confirmed that all wastewater was contained.”Downstream users have been informed, the release said. After a storm system dropped 60-70 millimetres of rain on the Regina area on Friday, and another 40-50 mm on Saturday, the city held a news conference where the director of water, wastewater and environment said the wastewater system had been pushed beyond its capacity, causing the Garnet Street lift station to send excess wastewater into Wascana Creek.Water quality testing had been ordered in Wascana Creek and the Qu’Appelle River system, where the dirty water was expected to arrive in about a week.
