(Francis Ferland/CBC News)Ontario’s Ministry of Labour is investigating after a man was killed by a heavy vehicle at a worksite in east Ottawa on Wednesday evening.Paramedics said they received a call at about 6:30 p.m. about a man who was trapped under the vehicle near the 2400 block of Sheffield Road, between Innes and Walkley roads in the Industrial Park area.The man was pronounced dead at the scene, paramedics said.At about 9 a.m. Thursday, two Ministry of Labour vehicles were seen at a Cascades facility on Sheffield Road, alongside police cruisers and a fire truck.”A ministry inspector has been assigned to investigate,” a ministry spokesperson told CBC News by email Thursday. “As the investigation is ongoing, no further details can be provided at this time.”Didn’t work for companyCascades is a packaging, hygiene and collection company headquartered in Kingsley Falls, Que. According to the company’s website, the Sheffield Road facility is used for collecting and processing discarded papers and other materials.The worker was not a Cascades employee but rather an external firm that had been contracted for maintenance and repair work, said vice-president Hugo D’Amours.He’d been working on a piece of equipment at the time of the incident, D’Amours said. A Cascades employee then found him and called 911.While paramedics initially said the victim had been crushed by a forklift, D’Amours told CBC his injuries had actually been caused by a Bobcat machine.Cascades will “fully collaborate” with the ministry’s investigation, D’Amours said.With files from Jayden Dill
