(Robb Douglas/CBC)B.C. Ferries has cancelled a number of sailings between Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast due to a mechanical issue over the weekend. The company said that crews on the Queen of Surrey vessel discovered an issue with the main engine’s turbocharger on Saturday evening, causing four late-night sailings to be cancelled. Those cancellations continued well into Sunday between Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver and Langdale on the Sunshine Coast, and B.C. Ferries says the cancellations will continue into Monday. As a result of the mechanical issues on the Queen of Surrey, B.C. Ferries says it is re-directing the Queen of Oak Bay from another route, to begin sailing the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route. As we’ve repositioned a vessel to provide service between #HorseshoeBay & #Langdale, some sailings between #HorseshoeBay & #DepartureBay are cancelled today and tomorrow. 📰 Details are in our #ServiceNotice🔗 https://t.co/7jHAYikXlc(3/4)—@BCFerriesIn turn, that has led to some cancellations on Sunday and Monday between Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay in Nanaimo, the Queen of Oak Bay’s prior route.”We are doing everything possible to mitigate impacts on our customers, moving the Queen of Oak Bay into service onto this route to provide alternate service,” said B.C. Ferries spokesperson Ceilidh Marlow in a statement.”This will mean that even with the Queen of Surrey out of service, we are retaining 69 [per cent] of planned service on Route 3 (Horseshoe Bay – Langdale) and 83 [per cent] on Route 2 (Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay).”Marlow said that customers should check the ferry authority’s current conditions page before they travel, and that anyone with reservations on cancelled ferries will be accommodated on later sailings. The spokesperson didn’t provide an exact timeline for when the Queen of Surrey vessel would return to service.”The reality is that older vessels require complex, time-intensive repairs before they can safely return to service,” Marlow said.”It underscores why renewing the fleet and adding capacity are so critical — newer vessels bring greater reliability, and we will also continue advocating for an additional vessel in the fleet to provide the resilience needed when issues arise.”B.C. Ferries said that the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route would operate with a 45-minute delay on Sunday, and there would be water taxis for foot passengers between those two terminals until further notice.
