(Jeff Stapleton/CBC)RCMP say the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man was hit by a police vehicle while being taken into custody last week in Yorkton, Sask.Police say they were called on Sept. 17 to respond to a report of a theft at a store on Broadway Street. A caller from the store said after the alleged theft, the suspect was outside and throwing rocks at a store employee. Another man joined him and both took off before police arrived.Just a few minutes later, RCMP spoke to a different caller who said that two men with the same description were throwing rocks at dogs, and threatened them with bear spray. The officers headed to the place the suspects were last seen. They located the pair, who ran away in different directions.Police followed one of them, a 22-year-old man, into a grassy area. One officer was on foot and one officer was driving a police cruiser. RCMP said the man was struck by the police vehicle and fell. The officers called EMS and drove the 22-year-old male to the hospital, and RCMP say his injuries are non-life-threatening, but offered no details beyond that. The second man, a 20-year-old local, was found and apprehended the same day without incident, while police were investigating another report.Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was contacted and determined the incident was within its mandate. However, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Criminal Operations will investigate the circumstances of the in-custody injury under SIRT’s oversight. On top of that, an internal investigation into professional standards has been launched by the Saskatchewan RCMP.As a result of police investigation into the theft, the 22-year-old man from Mallard, Man., is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, uttering threats, and resisting arrest. The 20-year-old Yorkton man was charged with theft under $5,000, assault, uttering threats, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting a police officer, and failure to comply with a probation order. The 22-year-old male is scheduled to appear in court in Yorkton on Oct. 27, and the 20-year-old has made two appearances on the charges already.ABOUT THE AUTHORAlex Kozroski is a reporter with CBC News in Regina.
