(Province of Nova Scotia)The Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County, N.S., is officially under control. In a social media post Saturday, Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources said the change in status marks a milestone in the fight against a fire that destroyed 20 homes and forced evacuations.According to the department, the fire is now considered under control because it is “responding well to suppression efforts” and is not expected to grow. That does not mean, however, that the fire is out. The DNR said it remains estimated at 8,468 hectares, a number that won’t change until a more accurate measurement can be done. Firefighters will remain on the scene to watch for hotspots until the wildfire is extinguished or winter conditions arrive. If the fire isn’t out by winter, the DNR said it won’t be a threat during those months. It will continue monitoring conditions until spring arrives and firefighting efforts will resume if needed. On Friday, a provincewide burn ban was lifted for all of Nova Scotia except for Annapolis County. Last weekend, residents of the final 84 civic addresses in the West Dalhousie area that had been subject to an evacuation order were cleared to return to their homes. In total, about 500 civic addresses were evacuated because of the fire, affecting over 1,000 people.
