(CBC)For 12-year-old Spencer Krassman, the surprise still feels surreal.”I didn’t expect for this to happen,” he said Friday afternoon, smiling after finding out at a school assembly he’ll soon be boarding a plane to Disneyland.Spencer was one of four students from Elsie Mironuck School in Regina chosen for an all-expenses-paid trip to California through Dreams Take Flight, a volunteer-run non-profit that offers trips for children from across Canada who face medical, mental, physical, social or emotional challenges. The Elsie Mironuck students were selected to recognize their contributions to the school community, a news release from the school said.Spencer and the other students didn’t know they’d been picked for a trip before the announcement at Friday’s assembly. They were initially told at the assembly they were participating in a trivia challenge, before the news was revealed.”I got called up for trivia and then after, I just won.… We just got trips to Disneyland,” he said.He said he’s really excited and is already making a list of things to do during the trip, which will happen next month, like trying out the rides, sampling the food, and meeting a few characters like Mickey Mouse and Shrek. For the mother of one of the students picked, the news brought back memories of her own childhood — she was also selected for a Dreams Take Flight trip when she was in elementary school.”It was fun, it was exciting — it was scary, but I had a good time,” said Chelsea Fagan. This time, it’s her daughter, 11-year-old Abriella, who gets to make the trip.Fagan has known about her daughter’s upcoming trip since May, and admitted it wasn’t easy to keep it a secret.”I was really excited. I really wanted to tell her,” she said.Abriella hasn’t been to Disneyland before but she’s really excited to see what’s there. Her favourite Disney character is Stitch, she said.Chelsea Fagan, left, who went on the same trip as a child, is now sending her 11-year-old daughter Abriella Fagan, right, for her first Disneyland adventure. (CBC)The “once-in-a-lifetime trip” will be a tightly packed one-day experience, said longtime volunteer chaperone Greg Guest, who helps organize the Regina contingent.”It’s a one-day … whirlwind trip, where we get as many rides in, parades in, churros, and whatever the kids want to do,” said Guest.Dreams Take Flight covers everything, from travel expenses to the food to the park tickets for the kids, he said.”Because that’s the major thing — it’s all about these kids, because they deserve this magical day.”The group will travel to Los Angeles via a chartered flight — donated by Air Canada, whose volunteer pilots and flight attendants for the trip will be dressed in Disney gear.ABOUT THE AUTHORAishwarya Dudha is a reporter for CBC Saskatchewan based in Saskatoon.
