A P.E.I. teacher facing sexual assault charges has been released from custody until his next court appearance.Roger Mbahia, 48, has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. According to the Criminal Code of Canada, sexual interference charges refer specifically to someone under the age of 16 being touched “directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object” for a sexual purpose.Mbahia appeared in court in Summerside on Wednesday along with his lawyer. He entered the courtroom wearing handcuffs and a blue jumpsuit with chains around his ankles. The judge agreed to Mbahia’s release under strict conditions. He’ll be subject to electronic monitoring, must remain on P.E.I. and has to surrender his passport. He’s not allowed to contact the victim, and has been ordered not to contact anyone under the age of 16 who isn’t an immediate family member by phone or on social media. On Monday, RCMP announced that Mbahia had been charged after an investigation that began on Sept. 25.Police didn’t say what his connection to the victim is or what school he worked at, but the École Pierre-Chiasson website listed a Roger M’bahia as a teacher as of Monday afternoon. That name has since been removed from the school’s website.According to RCMP, 48-year-old Mbahia had been a teacher in P.E.I. for approximately three weeks before his arrest on Sept. 29. (Laura Meader/CBC)In a Facebook post on Tuesday, La Commission scolaire de langue francaise (CSLF) said RCMP informed the board about the charges late Monday afternoon. The CSLF said in an email to CBC News on Wednesday that families and staff “at the school involved” had been notified, but didn’t confirm where the teacher worked.”The CSLF has been working closely with the RCMP since the beginning of this investigation and continues to follow established processes to ensure the investigation continues with the necessary respect and rigor,” the email reads.”The safety and well-being of students remains our top priority. Support measures are being offered to students and staff who feel they need them.”Letter sent to parentsPaige Graham, a parent at École Pierre-Chiasson and member of the home and school group, confirmed a letter went out to parents informing them of the situation, but said no further details had been released.Graham said she believes the CSLF is doing everything it can to support and protect students, families and staff at the school.”It’s very extremely shocking and unfortunate,” she said. “[It’s] shocking that it even occurred. Our children are so vulnerable and, you know, when the school board is hiring staff they do everything they can to hire people that are supposed to be trusting and a safe space for our families … But a background check doesn’t always tell you everything you need to know about a person.”Police said Mbahia had been a teacher in P.E.I. for approximately three weeks before his arrest. The P.E.I. Teachers’ Federation said in an email that it doesn’t comment on individual cases, particularly those that remain under investigation.
