The perpetrators smashed glass display cases and stole items valued at more than $200,000. Then on Aug. 23 in Lethbridge, Alta., a man was recorded on video surveillance breaking into Park Place Mall and going to Paris Jewellers. Police allege he smashed the window, took about $47,100 worth of gold chains and then fled in a rented Dodge Caravan. The 40-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman allegedly abandoned the van, bought an RV and left the city the next day. Investigators tracked down video surveillance that showed the man and a woman attending several jewelry stores in the Lethbridge mall two days prior to the break-in. They were “quickly identified as two Edmonton residents wanted in connection with multiple jewelry store break-ins,” Lethbridge police said.On Sept. 1, RCMP arrested the pair in Warman. Police obtained a search warrant and discovered evidence including 57 diamond rings linked to other jewelry stores and forged documents. “The necklaces stolen from Paris Jewellers in Lethbridge were not recovered,” Lethbridge police said. “However, police located a gold smelter inside the vehicle.”Lethbridge police have charged the 40-year-old man and 34-year-old woman in connection with the Alberta robberies. Regina police say the man and woman, both from Edmonton, also face criminal charges involving the robbery at the Regina store, including possession of stolen property over $5,000, identity theft and disguise with intent. Regina police say an 18-year-old man, also from Edmonton, was then arrested on Sept. 16 in connection with the Regina robbery. He has been charged with disguise with intent and robbery with violence. The Regina Police Service criminal investigation unit, which tackles complex investigations, said it worked with other police detachments in Alberta and Saskatchewan over the course of seven weeks to solve the case.
