(Trevor Brine/CBC)The mother of a 14-year-old Ukrainian girl allegedly assaulted by a group of teenagers at a Winnipeg school says the institution needs to do more to protect kids from bullying. Two people were arrested Monday in connection to an assault that took place at Oak Park High School, Winnipeg police said in a statement.Police said no other information on the incident will be released in order to protect the identity of the victims. But a Winnipeg resident told CBC News it was her daughter who was attacked in the incident, which happened last Thursday in a school washroom.”She was like shaking. She was shocked,” the woman said. “I never saw my daughter … in this condition.”CBC News is not identifying the woman to protect her daughter’s privacy. The woman alleges five teenage girls confronted her daughter, asking her whether she’d said something negative about them. She said the girls then started making fun of her accent and appearance. The woman alleges one of the girls smashed her daughter’s head into the bathroom counter, that she was pushed into the floor and that they kicked her.The woman said the incident has affected her daughter’s mental health, and that she is scared of going back to school. She said bullying is an ongoing issue at the school.”I don’t want my daughter like connecting together with [the five girls] because it’s absolutely unsafe and it looks like teachers can’t control it,” she said. “I would like to keep my daughter away from school until [the] principal and school … figure out and make a decision how we can resolve this problem,” she said. The family came to Canada in 2022 to flee Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The mother said she abandoned everything to keep her daughter safe, but that the incident has her questioning whether that’s the case.”I’m still shaking,” she said. “I’m shocked. It’s not supposed to be like this.”School working to address situation, principal says in letterOak Park High School and the Pembina Trails School division said they can’t comment on the matter as it’s ongoing. The incident was first reported on the Winnipeg Free Press Wednesday morning. In a letter sent to parents addressing the report, Oak Park principal Jennifer Bracken said the school can’t share details on any student matter, but that safety and well-being is their top priority.”The situation reported in the news is being fully addressed,” Bracken said in a letter, which was obtained by CBC News. She said supports have been provided to the affected teenager and all other students.”What happened last week did not meet the Pembina Trails’ standard of behaviour,”she said. “Our school has a diverse and culturally rich student body, and we value inclusion in our way of thinking and acting that allows each student to feel accepted, valued and safe. “With files from Djeneba Dosso and Information Radio
