(Trevor Brine/CBC)A power outage in the Osborne Village area has left approximately 1,000 Hydro customers without power since Monday morning, and power is not expected to be restored until later Monday evening. Major retailers in the Osborne Village neighbourhood including Safeway and Shoppers Drug Mart closed their doors on Monday after Hydro said a power outage in the area began sometime after 10:30 a.m.In a Friday afternoon interview on CBC radio’s Up to Speed, Manitoba Hydro media relations officer Peter Chura said the outage is due to an issue with a piece of equipment known as a distribution centre, and has left about 1,000 customers without power in the area, including homes and businesses. “So that piece of equipment faltered,” Chura said. “We don’t know the cause of that yet, but crews have already started replacing that with the new piece of equipment.”Chura said it will take some time in order for crews to safely replace the equipment, and power in the area is expected to be back up by around 8 p.m. on Monday. As part of the work crews will also have to inspect equipment in 60 other locations, he said. “We want to get this done as quickly as possible, we want to get it done as safely as possible first of all, so that was what was required to get this done safely,” he said. “We understand that it is a lengthy outage. It’s been since about 10:30 this morning, we understand it’s really inconvenient for people, really it’s not fun to have your power out for that long.”That is how long it takes to get the work done, and get it done safely.”Chura said any Hydro customers in the area should reach out to Manitoba Hydro if they still don’t have power restored after 8 p.m. on Monday.
