(CBC)Manitoba’s NDP government has followed through on a 2023 election campaign commitment to hire a new seniors’ advocate.The province is poised to appoint Leigh Anne Caron to serve as its first independent advocate for seniors. Pending approval from the legislature, Caron will start on Nov. 12, according to an order paper published Oct. 6.Caron ran Winnipeg’s Women’s Health Clinic from 2011 to 2019, according to her LinkedIn resume. She then worked at the Sexuality Education Resource Centre.According to a government statement in March, the advocate will set up an independent office of the legislature to examine individual complaints, as well as systemic issues faced by seniors and elders, similar to the provincial advocate for children and youth.The seniors’ advocate will also be required to make reports and recommendations to the legislature in a public manner.The recommendations could be on a wide range of government services, including health care, housing and government programs and supports, Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said in the statement.
