Halifax resident runs 5K in suit, carrying briefcase after fantasy football loss

Boyle was the unlucky participant in 2024-25, but an ankle injury sidelined him from the May race.Article contentArticle contentHe fulfilled his duties during the Valley Harvest Marathon Oct. 12 in Wolfville.Article contentArticle content“All the fans were cheering me on – it was great, you know,” the Halifax resident said. “They see the briefcase, they think I’m important.”Article contentHe finished the course in 22:59.Article content“What a beautiful race this is,” the good sport said. “I love the Valley. What an amazing atmosphere.”Article contentBoyle said he ran two previous five-kilometre races to prepare for the Wolfville run. But he did those without the briefcase.Article content“You can’t really swing your arms,” he explained of the difficult it presents. “It’s a one-arm pump the whole way.”Article contentThis is the third time the league’s loser had to run the race, but Boyle’s first time receiving the punishment. There’s 12 people in the league and his friends were there cheering him on as he crossed the finish line.Article content“We all agree this is a good way to get out and get some exercise and have fun doing it,” he said.Article contentThe loser is allowed to wear sneakers to run the race. The previous participants’ bibs and medals are inside the briefcase.Article contentArticle content“We’re going to keep putting them in until you can’t lift this thing.”Article contentAnd runners are also competing with the times from previous years. If a participant has the slowest time from their league, they have to jump into the Halifax Harbour with the suit on.Article content“That’s why you saw me going extra hard at the end,” Boyle explained.Article contentHe said there wasn’t one player who brought his team down last season, just some bad luck and tough matchups. He ended the campaign on a nine-week losing streak.Article contentBoyle said he’s trying to ensure he doesn’t finish in the basement again this season.Article content“I studied my ass off this year to make sure I had a good team and it didn’t work. I am already 1-4,” he said. “You guys might see me here next year again.”Article content
