(Laura Meader/CBC)A series of five suspicious fires in eastern Prince County that police believe to be connected are still under investigation by the P.E.I. RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit. The fires happened over a two-week period at the end of June and early July. They took place on properties in the New Annan, Clermont and Kensington areas. Each happened during the day, and all of the structures were abandoned residential buildings.”We recognize that in a small, tight-knit community such as Kensington and surrounding area, having fires in abandoned properties brings a lot of concern in the community,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer with the P.E.I. RCMP. “We take this very seriously, we continue to ask Islanders, anybody who may have information that can assist with this investigation to come forward and report that.”Moore said that tips from the public are still needed, and that police have already received lots of information.RCMP have not publicly stated if there is a person of interest in the incidents, or if any arrests have been made, but Moore said the investigation has been quite active.Cpl. Gavin Moore, media relations officer for P.E.I. RCMP, says there will be a serious penalty for the person who set the suspicious fires in the Kensington area. (Nicola MacLeod/CBC)”That’s why this is a Major Crime Unit investigation and we have investigators that have really worked the ground here investigating, talking to a lot of residents and seeing what information we can uncover,” he said. According to the RCMP, the timeline of the fires is as follows: June 24 on Route 2 in New Annan.July 1 on the Murphy Road in Clermont. July 1, later in the afternoon, at the same location as the June 24 fire on Route 2 in New Annan. July 8 on the Irishtown Road. July 9 on the Soloman Gallant Road.Moore encouraged anyone who was in the area during the time of the fires to report any suspicious activity, especially given that the fires occurred in broad daylight and in well-travelled areas. “We would expect that people may have seen things, things that may have stood out to them and been suspicious,” he said. “Those little pieces of information, no matter how small, can certainly help investigators and point them in the right direction.”Information can be shared with the Prince District RCMP, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. With files from Nicola MacLeod
