(Jeorge Sadi/CBC)Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has charged a retired RCMP officer with three counts of sexual assault. In a news release Wednesday, the Serious Incident Response Team said “there are reasonable and probable grounds” to believe that former sergeant Darrell W. Johnson committed criminal offences against a woman known to him.SIRT said its investigation into Johnson involved “conduct that was alleged to have occurred when the officer was a member of the RCMP as well as after his retirement.” It said the RCMP conducted its own investigation as well.Dennis Daley, the commanding officer of the Nova Scotia RCMP, said that Johnson served with the Mounties in Nova Scotia beginning in 2002 and retired in November 2023.The charges are “deeply disturbing and understandably distressing to the communities we serve,” Daley said in a statement Wednesday.”The RCMP remains steadfast in its commitment to integrity and accountability. We take all allegations of misconduct seriously, and our members are expected to uphold — and surpass — the high standards rightly demanded by Canadians.”Johnson is scheduled to appear in Port Hawkesbury provincial court on Nov. 13.MORE TOP STORIESABOUT THE AUTHORAnjuli Patil is a reporter with CBC Nova Scotia’s digital team.
