Ottawa provides $43.7-million loan for new apartment building in Saskatoon

(CBC News)The federal government is providing a $43.7-million loan to a rental housing project under construction in Saskatoon. The 162-unit apartment building, called The Hadley, is located at 620 Webster St. in the Forest Grove neighbourhood. The loan is being provided through the federal government’s apartment construction loan program, which provides fully repayable low-interest loans.Buckley Belanger, secretary of state for rural development and member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River was in Saskatoon Wednesday to make the announcement. “This is more than just construction. It’s about creating opportunities for individuals and families to build their futures with stability and dignity,” Belanger said in a news release. Saskatoon Mayor Cynthia Block said the loan represents a key step in easing the city’s housing shortage. She said that placing the development in well-connected areas allows for more affordable housing.“In short, this project is a huge win for Saskatoon, not just because of the new homes it will bring but because of where and how it’s being built,” she said.   She said that future residents will have easy access to public transportation, shops and recreation, all within walking distance of their home. “We’re doing more than adding housing,” Block said. “We’re creating stronger, more sustainable communities where people can live close to the things they need.”Construction site where crane collapsed The construction site was the scene of a worker’s death this summer when a crane set up on the south side of the building collapsed.Carl Lamoureux, 38, from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., died on July 5, and a 37-year-old man was injured and taken to hospital.The province’s Occupational Health and Safety branch is investigating the incident.
