(Andrew Rosenfeldt/Facebook)WARNING: This story contains graphic details about the scene of a homicide.Accused killer Andrew Rosenfeldt told a police officer that Nykera Brown was shot in the head during a home invasion.Const. Brett Friesen, testifying Monday at Rosenfeldt’s trial in Saskatoon for second-degree murder, said he arrived at the downstairs apartment at 124 Avenue P South minutes after getting a call about a shooting and an injured woman on Nov. 15, 2022.He said Brown was prone on the floor taking “short jolted breaths” with her eyes open when he came into the apartment.”It was a very dynamic situation in the suite, very gruesome,” he said.He spoke with Rosenfeldt, who said two men in black had invaded the apartment and shot his 20-year-old girlfriend. Family members of Brown were in court when graphic photos of the crime scene were shown, including Brown lying on the floor with a halo of blood around her head.Friesen testified there was no indication Rosenfeldt was intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. He wore an electronic bracelet on his ankle and was on a 24-hour curfew from an earlier court appearance.Police found 20-year-old Nykera Brown dead in an apartment in Saskatoon on Nov. 15, 2022. (Nykera Brown/Facebook)Earlier on Monday, the trial began with a voir dire, or trial within a trial, with the defence applying to question an alleged jailhouse informant who is a key Crown witness.Defence lawyer Chris Murphy wanted to quiz Crown witness Joshua Johnson on whether he has gang ties and has ever testified as an informant before. Johnson is expected to testify that Rosenfeldt confessed that he had shot Brown and then tried to make it look like a suicide. The two men shared a jail cell in the winter of 2022.Rosenfeldt’s judge-alone trial is at Court of King’s Bench before Justice Heather MacMillan-Brown. Elizabeth Addabor is the prosecutor. In the voir dire, the lawyers argued over the degree of disclosure provided to Murphy and whether he ought to be allowed to examine Johnson.Murphy said the prosecution did not provide all the material he requested and, because of that, he wanted to question Johnson.Addabor said the Crown provided Murphy with appropriate disclosure. She said some material wasn’t provided because Murphy’s requests were too broad, and would require too much work, or were not relevant.Murphy told MacMillan-Brown that he wanted to ask Johnson whether he is a gang member, whether he has ever testified before as a jailhouse informant, and whether he has ever attempted to provide that sort of information before.MacMillan-Brown ultimately ruled against Murphy examining Johnson before he testified. The trial continues Tuesday.ABOUT THE AUTHORDan Zakreski is a reporter in Saskatoon.
