(Winnipeg Police Service/Facebook)A pair of horses on the loose trotted along a busy Winnipeg street and paid a visit to a high school before they were escorted back home by police on Tuesday.”It’s not every day you hear ‘two horses in custody’ come over the police radio,” the Winnipeg Police Service said in a social media post on Tuesday. “But anyone working in west Winnipeg this morning heard just that. ” The “wayward horses” strolled down Wilkes Avenue in the Charleswood neighbourhood, police said. The street, which is particularly busy during morning commute, was even more dangerous to the animals because of the nearby CN rail line, police said. But the horses were not hurt and stopped at a local high school — much to the delight of students and “the mild chagrin of school staff trying to keep everyone safe,” police said. Officers held “the calm and co-operative animals” with help of neighbours, “a steady hand and a reassuring hug,” police said. Their owner then helped guide the animals, who were also escorted back home by police. The post didn’t indicate where the horses were from, or how they escaped. CBC reached out to Winnipeg police for comment.Police said “aside from one muddy hoofprint left on an officer’s boot,” everyone made it home safe.
