The gym said the personal and financial information of 21,000 customers may have been exposed.Thousands of members of a gymnastics centre in Gatineau, Que., may have had their personal and financial data stolen after a possible computer breach.Some 21,000 members of Unigym Gatineau learned about the Oct. 6 breach in an email from the club on Wednesday. The compromised data includes names, contact information, social insurance numbers, health insurance numbers, banking information and credit card numbers, including the three-digit security codes and expiry dates.According to Unigym, however, it only kept the financial information of about 300 competitive members on file. For the rest of its clients, only names and contact information may have been breached, the gym said.Securing dataIn an email to members, Unigym’s director of operations Marie-France St-Jean said the company worked to secure its data once the breach was discovered, and alerted both police and the province’s privacy commissioner.”Rest assured that we are continuing our efforts with our provider, Tonik Web Studio, to ensure the protection of our customers’ personal information. The corrective measures already implemented are aimed at containing the incident and preventing any recurrence,” St-Jean wrote.Social security and credit card information are among the information potentially exposed in a massive data breach involving tens of thousands of members of Unigym Gatineau. (Laurie Trudel/Radio-Canada)It took the gym’s web provider three days to discover the breach, and another week to notify Unigym Gatineau. It took the gym more than a week after that to notify members.Unigym chair Jean-Paul Caron acknowledged that delay, which he blamed on the web provider.Unigym Gatineau is urging clients to monitor their bank and credit card statements, and to be extra vigilant when it comes to unsolicited emails or calls.
