(John Woods/The Canadian Press)Emma Durand-Wood has won the byelection for the council seat in Winnipeg’s Elmwood-East Kildonan.The Saturday byelection was called in the northeast ward after the death of Jason Schreyer, the area’s former councillor, in April.Seven candidates ran to fill Schreyer’s seat: Emma Durand-Wood, Abel Gutierrez, Braydon Mazurkiewich, Carmen Prefontaine, Kyle Roche, Zekaria Selahadin and Chris Sweryda.They ran on campaign promises that included repairing roads and infrastructure, improving public safety and restoring community programs.Durand-Wood, an Elmwood community activist who has pushed the City of Winnipeg to plant more trees and allow more infill housing, said before the campaign she thinks residents in the area are tired of negativity and want solutions, from more frequent buses to better youth programs.Candidate Emma Durand-Wood. He also said during the campaign he wanted to see reinvestment in community centres, particularly Chalmers Community Centre, which he said hasn’t seen significant upgrades “in quite some time.”Candidate Abel Gutierrez. (Submitted by Braydon Mazurkiewich)Carmen Prefontaine, who worked for the City of Winnipeg and is also the executive board of the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Manitoba branch, said during the campaign she aimed to work with other levels of government to tackle unaddressed issues in her ward like homelessness and crime. Sweryda said during the campaign he wanted to continue working on projects he worked on with Schreyer, from efforts to improve food security and making infrastructure spending more efficient.
