(Alan Diaz/Associated Press)A string of vehicle thefts and an attempted break-in that ended after homeowners shot at the failed intruder — all within an eight-hour span — has led to a 27-year-old man’s arrest, Manitoba RCMP say.A white Ford F-250 was reported stolen from a property on Highway 9 in the rural municipality of Gimli at 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 20, police said in a news release on Monday.Officers who went to the property found an abandoned vehicle that had been reported stolen from Britannia Close in Selkirk, Man., earlier that morning.The stolen Ford F-250 was spotted multiple times and reported to police throughout the day, with callers saying the pickup truck was “seen causing mischief” to properties and driving dangerously in the Interlake area, RCMP said.The Ford F-250 was abandoned at an Elderberry Bay property in Fisher Branch around 5 p.m. that day, where a GMC Sierra was stolen.About an hour later, RCMP learned a Ford F-150 had just been stolen, and the stolen GMC Sierra had been left behind.Officers found the Ford F-150 in the rural municipality of Rockwood, just north of Winnipeg, but the driver did not stop for them.Failed break-inShortly after 8:30 p.m., RCMP in Stonewall were notified about an active break-in at a home on Road 87 N. in the RM of Rockwood.Officers were told an unknown man tried to enter the home by kicking in the back door. The homeowners, who were inside, shot at the man with a firearm.The man fled and tried to get into vehicles on the property, but he was unsuccessful and left on foot.The stolen Ford F-150 was found significantly damaged near the home.Police dog Stewie and a drone were used to find a man hiding along a brush line at a neighbouring property, police said.A 27-year-old man from Selkirk was taken into custody. He’s charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, three counts of possessing property obtained by crime, two counts of dangerously operating a conveyance, failing to stop after an accident, mischief, flight from police, break and enter with intent, and failing to comply with a release order.No injuries were reported.An RCMP spokesperson said they’re “looking into all aspects of the incident,” when asked by CBC News whether the homeowners who shot at a man would also face charges.RCMP detachments in Gimli, Fisher Branch, Selkirk and Stonewall are all investigating.More from CBC Manitoba:
