Supreme Court’s Cowichan decision declared that Crown and municipal fee-simple titles on a portion of land in Richmond, B.C., are “defective and invalid,” and imposed a duty on the Crown to negotiate reconciliation. The grand chief of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, Stewart Phillip, tells the CBC’s Michelle Eliot that the reaction to the Cowichan decision is a continuation of the historical mistreatment of Indigenous people in the province.
