(Sherry Mermuys)For the past few weeks, West Covehead’s Sherry Mermuys has been watching the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff games with her son and daughter-in-law.The family was playing cards prior to Game 5 of the World Series in Los Angeles when she received a video call from her daughter in Ottawa. If the World Series went to Game 7 in Toronto, Mermuys had a ticket. Her daughter and son-in-law managed to buy the tickets online as soon as they went on sale. The whole family knew, but was sworn to secrecy for days. “I was just flabbergasted,” Mermuys said. “The first thing out of my mouth was, ‘No way, no way.’ I couldn’t believe it. I was just shocked.”Mermuys has a bag packed and ready to go for Game 7 in Toronto tonight. She is bringing a Jays hat and Anne of Green Gables wig. (Sherry Mermuys)Mermuys has never been to a Jays’ game in person. But she’s been a fan since 2012. She always enjoyed baseball and even remembers watching World Series games in 1992 and 1993, when Toronto won back-to-back championships.”I played as a kid with my five brothers and all the neighbourhood kids,” she said. “We played our own games on the school diamond.”However, this excitement created an odd experience watching Game 6. She needed the Blue Jays to lose or there would be no Game 7. The Dodgers won 3-1.”It was so confusing because I would cheer for the Jays when they did good,” she said, “Not that I cheered for the Dodgers, but I was like, OK, this is inning number four, this is inning number five…”Her daughter and son-in-law will join her for the game tonight at Rogers Centre.”You never know what’s gonna happen and how quickly it’ll change,” she said. “I get to experience whether they win or not. I’ll get to watch the whole thing.”It’ll mean so much to me to be there with my family…. I just have the best family. My kids are the best.”ABOUT THE AUTHORJenna Banfield is an associate producer for CBC Prince Edward Island. She can be reached at jenna.banfield@cbc.caWith files from Mainstreet
