(CBC)A judge has approved a plea to a lesser charge by a former deputy chief with the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) who was accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague 14 years ago.Last summer, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) charged Uday Jaswal over the 2011 incident.Jaswal, who was an acting inspector at the time, met the woman at his office while both were on duty. They consumed some alcohol and engaged in sexual activity, according to the agreed statement of facts read out in court Monday. The OPS reported the incident to the SIU in March 2023. On Monday, Justice Robert Horton accepted a joint submission from Crown and defence lawyers that saw Jaswal plead guilty to a charge of breach of trust. Jaswal maintains the sex was consensual. As part of his six-month conditional sentence, he must abide by a 60-day house arrest. “I appreciate the severity of the issue that’s before us here today and I’m accepting responsibility,” Jaswal told court. Horton noted the deal was on the “more lenient end of the spectrum.”The Crown lawyer said that given the circumstances of the plea, no victim impact statement would be entered into the record. The woman, whose identity cannot be disclosed, shook her head and was in tears as the decision was read out. Jaswal resigned from the OPS in 2022 amid accusations of sexual harassment, including by a female civilian employee who detailed her story to CBC in 2021.With files from David Fraser
