(Chris Gareau/CBC)Manitoba’s newest RCMP detachment officially opened its doors in the town of Niverville on Monday, and officials say it’s a welcome addition to the growing community. The new detachment office, located at 329A Bronstone Drive in Niverville, officially opened to the public at 8 a.m. on Monday.According to the town, it will be regularly staffed by four RCMP officers, as well as one public service employee. While it will be considered an independent station, it will fall under the jurisdiction of the St-Pierre-Jolys RCMP detachment. The town previously received policing services through the St-Pierre-Jolys detachment, and Niverville town council said that detachment will also continue to serve the community “as required.”Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck said the town, which is located south of Winnipeg and was home to just under 6,000 residents as of the 2021 census, is one of the fastest growing communities in the province and has been in need of its own police detachment for years.“What this does is it increases our emergency services in the community,” Dyck said. “As a community grows, you have to continue to build upon what you have, whether it’s water, or wastewater, or emergency services. “So to be able to have something like this in our community just gives a greater presence, and obviously greater service.”Dyck said in recent years, town council and residents had been increasingly concerned about how long it took officers with the St-Pierre-Jolys detachment to get to Niverville when there was an emergency. He said they were concerned that a lack of law enforcement presence in the area could lead to increased instances of crime.Dyck hopes having a detachment in in the community will result in more residents calling police when they see things that could be criminal in nature.Construction on the new detachment office began in 2023, according to the town, and includes over 3,000 square feet of space. It will be open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and offer Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.The detachment will also accept general inquiries, and receive special occasion licences. The four officers at the new detachment will be dedicated to the town of Niverville, while rural areas surrounding Niverville will still be the responsibility of St Pierre-Jolys RCMP detachment. Anyone looking to contact the Niverville detachment can call 204-388-7060 for general inquiries, and 204-388-9330 for non-emergency police reports. With files from Christopher Gareau
