Six Fredericton-area schools closed, police investigating

(Gary Moore/CBC file photo)Six Fredericton-area schools are closing because of an “emergency situation,” according to the Anglophone West School District.The schools that are closed Tuesday are Fredericton High School, George Street Middle School, Nashwaaksis Middle School, Assiniboine Avenue Elementary School, Leo Hayes High School and Barker’s Point Elementary School, according to the district.Fredericton police are asking the public to avoid the schools until further notice.“Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence in and around these areas,” Fredericton Police Force spokesperson Sonya Gilks said. All the affected schools have been evacuated, police say.According to an update from the Anglophone West School District, buses have been redirected to temporary locations where staff are present to supervise students. Leo Hayes, Nashwaaksis and Barker’s Point students have been sent to Gibson-Neill Memorial Elementary School. Fredericton High and George Street students have been sent to Bliss Carman Middle School and Assiniboine Avenue students have been sent to Gesner Street Elementary.Some kids who walk to school may return home or be transported to a temporary site, according to the update.”Each site will be setting up a process to support safe release of students to families,” it said.ASDW said in another update that buses have begun taking students home from the temporary locations.Staff are trying to contact “every family with a child in Grade 6 or younger to confirm plans and ensure each student is safely released.”If a bus driver is uncertain dropping off a student they will be returned to the temporary location until arrangements are made.Moncton school also closedIn Moncton, Arnold H. McLeod School is also closed “due to the receipt of a concerning message,” according to the Anglophone East School District. In a letter to families from Randolph MacLean, district superintendent, bus students can be picked up at the evacuation site at Lewisville Church. “Please allow for some time for staff to get students organized in the church prior to releasing them,” the letter said.
