Sioux Valley Dakota chief charged with sexual assault: Virden RCMP

RCMP in Virden, Manitoba have charged the current chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation in connection with a historical sexual assault. According to a news release, Vincent Tacan, 65 was arrested Nov. 5 and charged with sexual assault. Tacan has served several terms as chief of the Dakota Nation, 250 km west of Winnipeg. Virden RCMP “…received a report of a historical sexual assault that occurred in 1984, in a community in western Manitoba,” says the release. The complaint was received by RCMP on May 5, 2025. The female victim advised police that the assault took place when she was a teen under the age of 16. The male suspect at the time was 24-years-of-age. RCMP also say in the release that “an extensive investigation took place that has now resulted in charges.” The Manitoba RCMP is not releasing the name of the victim nor where the assault took place in order to protect her identity. Virden RCMP continue to investigate. News of the charge comes as Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is just days away from an election for chief and council. Tacan is running against former chief Jennifer Bone in a two-person race for the two-year chief position. Fourteen people are vying for five councillor positions in the Nov. 13 election.
