(Andrew Kurjata/CBC)RCMP say they arrested a 46-year-old man after illicit drugs were sold to “undercover operators” at the well-known Prince George, B.C., restaurant where he worked.Prince George RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said after the sale, police executed a search warrant at the Twisted Cork on Friday and arrested the man who was believed to be using the restaurant to operate an “open air” drug market.”Open air drug markets refer to anywhere where drugs are sold openly — so not covertly, but openly — and with the intent to attract as many customers of illicit drugs as possible,” Cooper told CBC News in an interview.CBC News spoke to restaurant owner Troy Mackenzie who said the news was “troubling” and that the first he knew of the investigation or alleged illicit drugs sales was when police contacted him on the day the arrest took place. Since then, he said, he’s been fully co-operative, allowing police access to his restaurant, as well as security camera footage and any other materials they may need.He said he had no further information to offer and was himself learning new information from an RCMP press release about the investigation that was distributed Monday. He said investigators told him that he was not facing any potential charges and that the restaurant itself was not implicated. The Twisted Cork is one of the oldest independent restaurants in downtown Prince George, operating since at least 2009 about a block away from city hall and adjacent to other locally-owned businesses on the 1100 block of 5th Ave.Cooper would not comment on any other aspect of the investigation, saying only that police are analyzing seized drugs and putting together information to send to Crown counsel for the consideration of charges. The suspect has been released pending potential charges, police say. With files from Bismah Mughal
