(CBC)Turtle Mountain MLA Doyle Piwniuk says he will not run in the next provincial election.The announcement comes just days after the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba held its annual general meeting in Winnipeg.In a Facebook post Tuesday, Piwniuk said the decision followed “much reflection and discussion” with his family, and was motivated by a desire to spend more time with them and “focus on the next chapter” of their lives together.Piwniuk was first elected in 2014 in the former Arthur-Virden constituency, following Larry Maguire’s move to federal politics. He has since represented the southwest Manitoba region under the Turtle Mountain name following boundary changes.He served as minister of transportation and infrastructure under then-premier Heather Stefanson, and earlier as deputy speaker of the legislative assembly.Before entering politics, Piwniuk had worked as a pension fund accountant before moving to Virden to work at an insurance company.In his Facebook post, he called it “an incredible honour” to serve his constituents and said he remains committed to his duties until the next election.On Wednesday, PC Leader Obby Khan said Piwniuk served with dedication and passion and that he supports the Turtle Mountain MLA’s decision.”We recognize the significant demands placed on all MLAs — and their families,” Khan said in a statement.”We thank him for his devoted service and wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavours.”Khan said the nomination process to select Piwniuk’s successor will begin soon and called this “an exciting time for the people of Turtle Mountain and the new era of the PC Party.”With files from Bartley Kives
