(Justin Fraser/CBC)The City of Winnipeg says it is implementing changes after a child was hit by a car while riding a bike in the south Osborne area last week.Dozens of Winnipeggers rallied at the corner of Osborne Street and Brandon Avenue to demand safer infrastructure on Thursday afternoon, just over a week after a driver turning left off Osborne hit 10-year-old cyclist Jakob Adams.Crystal Adams, Jakob’s mother, said she had just gotten home from a night shift when she got a call from her son’s school. She met him at the Children’s Hospital.”Jakob was struck and had mostly facial damage. Had some injuries on his right side. He had seven stitches to his forehead,” she said, adding that he also had broken and displaced teeth.”It could have been a lot worse, but still, no one wants to see their kid like that.”Anna Weier, an advocate who helped organize the rally, said the case highlights the need for safer infrastructure in the city for pedestrians and cyclists.”In this instance and many other intersections, cars will have a green light to turn at the same time as pedestrians will have a walk signal,” she said. “It can be very dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.”Pedestrians to get head start: city The City of Winnipeg said in an email after the rally it will be installing a leading pedestrian interval at the intersection by the end of the week. That gives people crossing the street a five-second head start before cars get a green light. It’s meant to make them more visible.Nearly 100 pedestrian head starts were installed in the city’s downtown earlier this year. The city said it will also be exploring other options to make the intersection safer.”We never want to see anyone get hurt on our roads,” a spokesperson said in the email. “Improving safety for people walking and biking is a priority.… We are also prioritizing safety improvements where more vulnerable road users, such as seniors and children, may be impacted.”Weier said there are suggestions to lower the speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour.”I just want people aware of the dangers there,” Crystal Adams said. “[It’s] not my area of expertise, but a lit crosswalk or a left-turn light would be helpful. Bike lanes would be helpful.”WATCH | Mom calls for safer infrastructure at Winnipeg intersection:Winnipeg mom calls for safer infrastructure after son hit by carDozens of people rallied Thursday at the corner of Osborne Street and Brandon Avenue to support 10-year-old Jakob Adams, who was injured after he was hit by a car while crossing the street.
