(Tyson Koschik/CBC)Residents are being asked to avoid the Quinpool Road area in Halifax because it is still considered an active fire scene following an early morning blaze, according to an alert from the municipality sent Friday evening.”Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency is still engaged in active firefighting at 6380 Quinpool Road and the fire scene continues to release very toxic smoke,” the alert read. “All residents are being requested to stay away from this location for their safety.”On Friday morning, fire ripped through a building on Quinpool Road that contained at least two apartments and several businesses. No one was injured.In addition to avoiding the area, the alert says home and business owners in the area should keep windows and doors closed and “turn off systems that bring in air from the outside.”Quinpool Road will be closed between Oxford Street and Preston Street overnight and on Saturday. It will reopen once Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency determines the site is safe.Earlier Friday, crews were busy demolishing the two-storey building on Quinpool Road, which sustained extensive damage in the blaze. Demolition began Friday afternoon and part of the road was closed.Firefighters were still hosing down hot spots as an excavator dug through the rubble near the intersection of Quinpool Road and Oxford Street. “We’re going to be in the process of picking material from the pile, making sure it’s fully extinguished, loading it onto dump trucks and those kind of take [the debris] away,” Brad Connors, district chief with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, said early Friday afternoon.Firefighters work on the roof of a Quinpool Road building after a neighbouring structure was destroyed by fire on Friday morning.
